When God promised Abraham and Sarai that they would have a son he promised the impossible. What God intended could not be done.

The old couple, not surprisingly, struggled to believe. They tried to help God out and produce a son by other means. Their efforts assisted God in no way whatsoever.

God’s house is not established by earthly means. He wanted a miraculous start. He chose a barren woman, a woman who had wept tears every time her period came when she knew she was still not pregnant. The Lord saw her tears and knew the pain she suffered from her lack. He saw her shame as the friends she grew up with produced healthy broods for their husbands. He heard the mocking comments, the fake pity of false friends and the taunts of her servant girl who conceived with her husband, so easily.

God saw all of that and the Lord chose to place the life upon which his work depended in that barren woman. Only one woman in history would ever have a more famous son.

The Lord wants a house that he has built. It is his effort, his design and his life that will build his house. And he started with three barren women, Sarah, Rebekah and Rachel, just in case anyone missed the point.

His house does not look like the houses that men build. We can build great ministries with earthly means. We can establish vast mega churches with the methods of Harvard business school but they are not the house of God. God may have friends in such places but his house they are not.

He chose one couple who gave up everything for him and he gave them a son. He then asked Abraham to slay his son. All the years of waiting were thrown away. This son, the son of promise was to be thrown away. And Abraham was willing to do it. God’s house will be established by our Lord no matter what we do. He will defend his house and he will protect his work. Men very easily get on their high horse and fight to protect their ministry and their work but Abraham followed the Lord and was willing to sacrifice anything for his God. It was not the call of Abraham to protect the Lord’s work. It is not the call of fallen men to take up arms for the lord and protect God’s work. It is the Lord and our relationship with him that matters above all things. Abraham trusted God and God protected Isaac.

God is the builder and he alone will establish his home. He alone will protect it and ensure that it stands. So what is the call of men and women who follow him? It is very simple. Our role is to give up everything and follow him.

In Abraham the Lord found a man prepared to do just that. Very soon he would have a people.

‘What God intended could not be done’ and ‘ It is not the call of fallen men to take up arms for the lord and protect God’s work. It is the Lord and our relationship with him that matters above all things’ – very encouraging
